Barcelona...

So this weekend Kody and I went to Barcelona to go to the beach!! Welp, it started out rough, but in the end we had a great time!

We took a train there and it was a lot of fun and very cool to take a train somewhere! I watched Sherlock Holmes 2 in Spanish which was pretty cool. But the second we got off the train and went down then escalator to get on the metro I stumped my foot and my shoe broke! lol. I only brought 2 pairs of shoes to Barcelona, my flip flops for the beach and my nice sandals which are the ones that broke. FAIL! So then I only had my flip flops. Then when we go off the metro to  find our place it took us 45 mins walking up and down the street trying to find it. When we finally found it, it definitely was NOT what we were expecting! lol. It was not the Ritz nor Holiday Inn that's for sure!  We walked into the lobby got our keys and took 2 steps to the right and there was our room in the middle of the lobby! lol. Oh and it had no air conditioning just a little fan  and a window, the shower was in the middle of the room right next to the bed with a sink, and the bathroom was out in the lobby! We could also hear EVERYTHING!! It was a place like no other place I have been before. It kinda felt like the movie "Just Married" when they go to this "hotel" and it is all run down. Yea if you have seen that movie and can imagine that then just picture us there! lol.

After the initial shock of the room we decided to get out of there and go to the beach. The beach was sooo beautiful and the water felt really good. It was the first time that we had seen and swam in the Mediterranean Sea which was pretty awesome! We stayed there all day and then that night we walked down La Rambla street (which is where we were staying). It is a very famous and touristy street. There are a lot of vendors and cafes to go! We walked all the way up the street and found a beautiful area where people were just sitting and playing cards in this square by 2 beautiful fountains that were all lit up! Then, we went to a cafe where Kody and I had the biggest Sangria and Beer ever! I still cannot believe I drank the entire thing by myself! lol.

The next day after sleeping in the hottest place ever, we went to the beach all day and got burnt! lol. That night, after finding me some new shoes :),  we went to a sports bar that we had been to the night before and had dinner and watched the opening ceremony for the Olympics which were pretty spectacular.

On Saturday, took a tour of the Camp Nou Stadium which is the Barcelona teams stadium. It was a tour a lot like the Santiago Bernabeu, but it had cool touch screen walls and tables that you could touch and bring up videos and articles about the players and such! After that we went to the Picasso Museum which I was very excited about! It was very interesting and amazing to see some more of his work! That night Kody and I went to a bar called the Dow Jones which was pretty neat! It was set up like the stock market and drinks were the market. When ever you bought a drink that drink's price would go up and the other drinks' prices would go down! It is actually a really good idea for a bar! Then we went to a club right next to our place called Boulevard and it was a lot of fun!

Barcelona is a cool, fun place to visit for the weekend, but I am glad that I am spending 6 weeks in Madrid. There are just a lot of tourist in that area and a lot of the people and servers there are very rude because they have to deal with tourist all the time. But, I definitely enjoyed the beach and the weekend there!

Santiago Bernabeu, Royal Palace, & Bullfight

This week has been pretty cool! We got to do and see a lot of a amazing and beautiful things. On Monday we took a tour of the Santiago Bernabeu!! OMG it was awesome! We got to walk on the side of the field, sit in the seats that the players sit in during the game, see their trophy room, press room, and the locker room! It was pretty awesome to think these are some of the places where the players walk!! It was kinda sad to see where the tennis court where nadal would have played if he didn't cancel it though. I was sooo looking forward to that but oh well maybe next time! :)

Tuesday night we went and got Churros con Chocolate!! OMG soooooooo good. It is basically like funnel cake with a cup of warm chocolate that you dip the churros in. Seriously the best thing I have had in Spain!

Wednesday the whole program took a trip to the Royal Palace and it was beautiful, but EXTREMELY hot!!! The did not have the air conditioning running and the fans that were in the rooms were not on. So we pretty much were hot and felt faint the entire tour. But it was still very interesting and I am glad we went.

Wednesday night Kody, Morgan and I made a HUGE mistake that we all regret and will never do again! haha. The colegio has a curfew M-T that is at 3am! At 3am the colegio is locked and no one can get in or out of the gates from 3-7am! You would think it would be easy to make it back before 3am, but we places don't even open until 1am it gets a little hard! Well, we decided on Wednesday that we wanted to go out with some of the people who were leaving on Thursday to go on the excursion to the north of Spain. We went to Cats (discoteca) and instead of leaving with our group at 2:45am Morgan, Kody and I decided that we would just stay. That would have been ok if we didn't have a curfew and if we didn't have to be up at 8:30 to go to a museum at 8:50am! So we stayed at Cats until 4am then left with some other people from the program to go to another club. We had to take a taxi there and that cost us then the club had a 15 euro cover charge and we decided that was too expensive! So the 3 of us went to a chocolateria to get churros and chocolate (sooooo good) and ended up staying there and pretty much struggling to stay awake, I think we all feel asleep once or twice lol, then took a taxi home at 5:45 because the metro closes at 1am and opens up again at 6 so we had to pay a taxi. Then we had to sit in front of the colegio for an hour we 20 other people! I felt homeless ahaha!! But it was funny. So we got an hour of sleep and then woke up to go to the Sorolla Museum. This was probably the best museum I have been to yet. His paintings are amazing and the museum is his house which is beautiful and consists of gardens and fountains in the courtyard! However, even though it was beautiful, none of us were feeling well enough to walk around a museum! It was a pretty hilarious experience! At least our professor was understanding and joked around with us. But never again will I miss curfew and not sleep! hahaha. Lesson Learned!

Sunday, Kody and I went shopping and I had a Marilyn Monroe moment!! haha. We walked over a subway grating and my dress flew right up and everyone on the street saw. These teenagers even pointed and laughed!! It was pretty funny and was very embarrassed. That night Kody and I went to watch a Bullfight. It was pretty interesting! The first bull that we had to watch die was sooo sad. I did think I could watch another  one, but after the 1st it wasn't so bad and it actually was really interesting! I also found look alike Johnny Depp at the bullfight! hahaha YUM! :) I don't if I will go to another bullfight here in Spain because of time, but I definitely think I would go to another one maybe in Mexico.

El Prado and more...

The past couple of days have been really exciting. On Thursday the program took a trip to The Prado Museum!  It was soo amazing to see all the wonderful paintings especially the ones that I am learning about in my Art Appreciation class here! My favorite room in the Prado was The Black Paintings by Goya. That room was full of his paintings that were painted straight to the walls of his house. Some of the paintings may seem disturbing at first, but once you discover the meanings behind them it makes them a lot more powerful! Another painting that I really was excited to see was Las Meninas by Velazquez. It is a painting that has been studied for many years and it is structure perfectly. I loved the Prado is was the biggest museum I have ever been to and it was just amazing to walk around!

I did a lot of shopping and walking around on Friday and Saturday! My feet are killing me! I am going to iron feet and calves of steel by the time I get home!We went to a 4 story H&M!! I was in heaven! At first we were not going to go in because we have H&M in the U.S but then Kody said we should so we did and spent 2 hours in there! AMAZING!

We went out Thursday and Friday night also, but Friday night we definitely went hard! Its crazy here because no one gets ready to go out until 1 or 2am! This one club does not even open until 1am! Totally different from America! In the U.S people usually go out at 10 and come home at 1 or 2am, but not here! We went out to our favorite bar PizPaz until 2am and hung out with the owners and the bar tenders and then went to a club called Cats with some of the bartenders! When we left at 4am people were still lined up out side to get in! CRAZY! When we got back to that colegio we ended up staying up until 7am! Kody and I sat outside in the garden and talked for a while and when we got up Kody said, "Look, the sun is coming up!" haha that is when I knew it was time for bed! lol.

Today we went to the Rostro which is kinda like a flee market that happens every Sunday from 10-2! There were several streets packed with stands full of purses, jewelry, shirts, and all sorts of trinkets and other cool stuff! I bought some cool stuff there like a picture, necklace, 2 dresses, and a big tote bag! But other than buying stuff it was just so cool to walk around.

We encountered another pickpockter while riding the metro to the Rostro! She was actually trying to pickpocket one of the professors here and I saw her trying to do it and I told Kody and Morgan and Kody told our professor so she was not able to get anything. Not today pickpocketer! It is crazy how they do it here, but I am starting to know how to pick them out and how they do it!

After the going to Rostro, Kody and I laid by the pool at the colegio and did some homework. It's nice having a pool right outside my door for once!

Time for another week of classes WAH! BUT! We are touring the Santiago Bernabeu stadium tomorrow so I am super excited!

I am starting to really love it here! I don't know how I am going to be able to leave it!

Getting Lost in Madrid

Today my Spanish class took a field trip to the writers district which is where all the famous writers lived. We visited the Museo de Lope de Vega which is a famous writer from Madrid. The museum was really cool because it was his actual house that he grew up in and lived in throughout his life. Outside the museum wear writings and quotes on the ground about the Lope de Vega and other writers. We also got to see where Cervantes (writer of Don Quixote) lived that was very cool. All the street names were also named after each writer who lived in that district.

When we got back to the colegio we ate lunch and Morgan wanted to go find the hotel where her fiance is going to be staying when he comes here and Elizabeth wanted to get a hair dryer in a few weeks so around 2:30pm Morgan, Kody, Elizabeth, and I put on our tennis shoes and decided to take an little walk up the street......little did we know we would get lost!  The hotel was the opposite way out of the colegio than we have been taking and are used to.   We walked for a while and after looking at maps and asking people where the hotel was we finally found it! Well then we decided that we did not want to walk back and instead we should just take the metro back to the colegio and go get Elizabeth's hair dryer.....BIG MISTAKE! We got on the metro and instead of going South, we went North! We went one stop up and got off and then decided to walk from there thinking we were still going the right way and only a few minutes from the colegio. Well when we got off we just started walking and taking turns and going straight, left, right, straight...LOST! There was no other metro station in sight that we could just get back onto! Well we kept walking and then we saw a sign from the Santiago Bernabeu soccer stadium...ummmm...so the stadium is about a 1.5 miles from the colegio and we were 1.5 north from the colegio soooooo we walked like 4 miles to the soccer stadium! haha and then took the metro back to the colegio and got back around 5:45! A "little walk" turned into the longest exploration I have ever been on! haha It was crazy getting lost but definitely a fun experience, wouldn't want it to happen again though! lol. After that I HAD to take a siesta and I did for 3 hours!!! haha. Starting to love the idea of siestas!

Besitos!

Primer día de clases

The first day of classes was not too bad. Spanish class will be ok and I will learn a lot that will help me not only in Madrid, but also when I talk to my family in Mexico! :) Art Appreciation is also going to be really interesting! I am excited to go to all the museums in Madrid to see the art and learn about the artists that we are talking about in class.

Classes ended around 2pm and then we had lunch. I was starving!!! Its weird because in Spain people eat an early breakfast, late big lunch, and extremely late dinner. Dinner here at the colegio is at 8:30-9:30 which is pretty late for me. However, if you go to a restaurant to have dinner a flood of people will arrive at 10-11pm. It is normal in Spain for people to have dinner at 10pm. People stay up really late here, you can even see little children with their parents out from 10-1am! Its crazy. I am starting to think that the reason for this is because the sun literally does not go down until 10pm but it looks and feels like 7pm. Its different! Lol. So tonight after dinner we decided to go to a little cervezeria (kinda like a "little" outdoor bar/cafe') to have drinks. Here when you order drinks they will bring you all kinds of tapas (snacks) with your drinks for free which is soooo nice! We got served french fries with meatballs (weird combo but good), chips, and olives! I wish bars at home did this! haha.

Besitos!

Primer fin de semana en España

Hey everyone!!

Sorry I have not blogged...I thought I had the right adapter to plug in my computer but I did not so I finally had time to go out and buy one today! :)

On Thursday I woke up at 9am and had to arrive at the airport by 2pm. My flight then left at 7pm. Traveling here was the longest plane ride I have ever been on! The first flight was 10 hours! My legs were killing me by the end of that flight and I only slept for 30mins of the flight. We landed in Frankfurt, Germany and stayed there for about 3 hours. While we were walking around Elizabeth and I met another AOII from UGA! Crazy running into an AOII in Germany haha! She was on a layover to go to Sweden! That was cool!  Then we had to get on another flight for 3 hours!! On that flight I actually got to sleep for at least an hour. We finally made it to Madrid, Spain at 3pm Madrid time on Friday, which means it was 9am Friday morning in the Georgia!! AHHHH so I had been up for  24 hours and had to stay up for longer because we had to travel to the colegio and explore and what not!!

When we got to the colegio we got our room assignments. The colegio and our room are great! The colegio is BEAUTIFUL!!! There is a pool and a basketball court wand beautiful garden! Our room is also pretty big with enough space for me and Morgan! After getting settled we walked around the city (its very suburban looking here!) I love it walking everywhere!! We got ready and went to a restaurant that had 1 beers hahaha! But, it was serious culture shock when we got to the restaurant and looked at the menu and had NO idea what anything was! We just had to pick something, but thankfully what we picked was pretty good. From there we went to a bar that was suggested by one of our professors lol, Pis Pas. That place was great! We met the owner, Alex, and his brother and they were awesome. Kody, Morgan, Elizabeth and I were the only ones there for a while talking to the owners and then all the other students showed up and it was a blast!

Saturday
We had to wake up early and take a bus tour around Madrid. It was great because we went to all the cool monuments and attraction areas like the Real Madrid soccer stadium (Santiago Bernebeu) and got out of the bus and took TONS of pictures!! It was very exciting. When we got back to the colegio Kody and I had a little date lunch which was nice and then went back to the colegio for our meeting. After our meeting the entire program went took the metro to Plaza Mayor which was very cool and was what I think of when I think of Spain with hundreds of people there and venders on the street and a bunch of shops. Kody and I walked through the market before dinner and that was a cool experience. The market had every kind of food you could want and you can eat there too which I hope to do. Then the whole group went to a tapas restaurant to eat and was really good! After dinner we walked around Puerta del Sol which was just outside the Plaza Mayor. Then we had the CRAZIEST/SCARIEST experience on the way home on the metro. When we were on the metro this sketchy guy tried to pickpocket Morgan's purse and Kody saw it from across the metro and screamed out, "Hey! He's pickpocketing you!!" And Morgan and I both saw the guy and I DO NOT know what came over me but I grabbed his jacket that he had over his arm to help him pickpocket her and started yelling at him asking him what he took! Probably unsafe for me to do, but everyone on the metro was mad that he did that and were yelling at him! When the metro stopped he got off and that was our stop too so we waited a second and got off too, but then saw him get right back on the metro, obviously up to no good! CRAZY, gotta keep our guard up!!

Sunday
It was a great day on Sunday because we went to the oldest city in Spain and Spain's previous capital, Toledo! The bus drove us up to the peak of the city and let us out to the beautiful site I have ever seen! Taking pictures could capture what I was seeing (but I took a ton anyways!) We then explored Toledo and all its wonders! We got to see a beautiful painting by El Greco, "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz". We walked around Toledo from 10-6pm so when we got home we all took a seiesta (nap) and it felt amazing! Then we got ready to go out to dinner and ate Pizza with Sangria which was AMAZING!!! After dinner we just went back to the colegio and got ready for classes to start on Monday!
